David

I’m from the beautiful state of Oregon, where I received an elementary teaching license and master’s degree in education from Portland State University. I worked in Portland schools for two years before moving to Taipei. I’ve now lived in Taipei for more than eight years and have primarily been working in the public school system. I have taught thousands of students here a wide variety of lessons. They include more serious classes based around learning phonics and grammar, to more fun classes such as playing the drums, learning about music around the world, and even how to play ping pong. I look forward to putting my experience to use at Maple Tree Academy and helping students to improve their English. I’m a big fan of the outdoors and enjoy hiking and biking, and also just hanging out at home with my family.

Jake

Hello, my name is Jake Hosking, I hail from the sunny state of Arizona! I came to Taiwan with a wealth of experience in working with children and a passion for helping students grow and learn to express themselves. In the time I’ve spent since, I’ve developed my abilities as an educator, growing to love the process of sharing and exploring language with my students.

In my free time, I enjoy bringing my passion for community to one of my favorite places on earth: summer camp, where I’ve worked as a videographer and counselor for over a decade. I also enjoy performing music and hiking with old friends and new ones too. I'm excited to begin working at Maple Tree and continuing to bring energy and fun to learning English!

Sam

Hello! I am teacher Sam from the United States. I was born and raised in California before heading to Minnesota for college. There, I earned my bachelor's degree in East Asian studies and played on the collegiate baseball team for four years. My studies ranged from contemporary Asian politics to classical Chinese literature, and to Asian ecological studies. After college, I worked as an SAT/ACT college admissions tutor before moving to New York to further my education as a teacher.

At Teaching House New York, I obtained my CELTA teaching certificate. This served as a catalyst for my English teaching journey to Taipei. The reason I chose to come to Taipei is because of the friendly nature of the people, the endless availability of sights for exploration, and the opportunity for a one-of-a-kind cultural immersion experience. As a teacher, I draw from my liberal arts college experience to create a collaborative, student-centered learning environment in the classroom. I always strive to meet the individual needs of my students and cultivate a group of passionate learners. I look forward to seeing you in the classroom soon!

Her original plan was to stay for one year, but she ended up staying for eight years. She studied Korean language at Konkuk University in Seoul and became even more passionate about learning languages and teaching English. In 2015, she moved to Taiwan and obtained her TESOL certificate. During that same year, she started working with Studio Classroom and taught English on television. Missing the classroom experience, she decided to go back to teaching children. She has been with us for more than three years.
